There is something magical about this game. Playing Alex Kidd The Lost Stars is like taking an acid-trip into The Beatles ''Magical Mystery Tour'' or ''Pepperland'' albums. The song ''Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds'' best describes this game with John Lennon singing about newspaper taxis, rocking horses eating marshmallow pies and girls with kaleidoscope eyes. Just change that to marching decks of cards, monsters throwing bananas at you and naked punk rockers shooting skulls from their arses and you got one psychedelic journey into space and time to return the stars to the skies of planet Aries.
The music is absolutely wonderful and nothing short of amazing! No matter whether the tunes are heard in PSG or FM, they instantly get you tapping your toe with a smile on your face.
On this CD album, you have the benefit of hearing the entire anthology to this game, from Arcade to SMS FM to SMS PSG.
The arcade tracks were recorded from VGM MP3 rips, the FM-YM2413 tracks were recorded from my PAL SEGA MEGA Drive model 1 console by using the Mega EverDrive X7 cart and turning on the YM2413 core. The PSG tracks were recorded from a VGM set from SMSPower.
I recorded the FM-YM2413 tracks from real hardware because they didn't sound right over at SMSPower from the VGM set, something was off and you couldn't hear the hi-hat rhythm properly, also although I used a VGM set from SMSPower for the PSG tracks, again something isn't 100% correct, the square tones sound slightly crinkly. Maybe I should have done these off real hardware too? Oh well they still sound faithful enough.
