Alien Isolation - #shortgameplay #game #like #subscriber
4/5 One of the best games of the Survival Horror Genre.
Easily on my top 5 of my personal best survival horror games, right up there with titles such as Anmesia The Dark Descent, Outlast, Penumbra, Dead Space, among others.
Its got everything you can ask:
A really dense atmosphere.
A High risk - high rewards system to incentivize exploring, even when it's extremely inconvenient.
Captivating story with a terrific ending.
Interesting mechanics to interact with the world, which in my opinion add so much to the immersion.
A competent AI, who ensures you dont have it easy on your short stay on the spaceship.
Starting with the atmosphere, there's so much to praise about the amount of detail that went into making the spaceship as high fidelity as it is to the Alien universe, it really does capture the futuristic aesthetic of it all, but most importantly, it flawlessly captures the maze-like, threateningly close-quarters environments which makes being hunted by a monster whose only desire is to end your existence, just that much more attractive.
There's a crafting system implemented in the game which allows you to craft all kinds of useful gadgets to help you overcome the fatal situations you constantly find yourself in. Such gadgets, of course, come with a price. You will be able to loot different boxes, drawers, lockers, and even corpses in order to make a small fortune of scrap material to help create throwable distractions, alien-repellents, and even bombs.
The story starts of STRONG, and it only gets better and better. Make sure to read all of what you can find in the computers. This also plays into the looting mechanic as previous users of these machines might have left some useful information left behind.
The interactivity of the world it's different from that of Amnesia like titles, in which you can throw a jar from across the room and shatter it to hundreds of pieces. In this case, there's mechanics just for about anything your character interacts with, making you, the player, actively partake in these activities instead of just pressing E and looking at a scripted animation.
Theres navigable menus on the several computer stations that you find, so you can read logs, or select and reproduce audio logs from previous users, or activate different actions to complete missions, and so on.
There are Rewiring Stations, which allows you to interact with the environment by toggling different systems from the spaceship, creating useful distractions, or filling an area with smoke so you can sneak pass more easily, or even unlocking doors to prevously unnacessible areas.
There's a whole Hacking system in place involving different mini-games in order to hack your way through the spaceship, making hacking really interactive, fun, and sometimes, REALLY inconvinient and nerve-wraking in some situations (which only adds to the overall terrific survival aspect of the game).
The saving mechanism it's really interesting, it doesn't cost anything tangible, like an ink ribbon, it instead forces you to remain vulnerable for 3 seconds before you can save your game, which doesn't sounds like much, but 3 seconds can be an eternity under certain conditions.
And finally, the AI.
In a scale in which GTA NPC's represent 1, and F.E.A.R's Replica Forces represent 5, its a 4.
The xenomorph its ALWAYS lurking close by, and it will let you know by making all sorts of unsettling noises around you, until it finally decides it's time for blood, and goes all in into hunting you.
You can stay all you want in a locker, but it will know you're there, until it eventually makes you a favor and opens the door for you, and when it does, it's game over.
Every time you get killed, you'll respawn on the last saving station you manually saved into, so saving while in a hunt it's imperative if you don't want to repeat that whole ordeal.
This AI system forces the player to be constantly on the move, to adapt to new situations every time there's a restart, to make use of the several distraction mechanics available to the player; in other words, this AI makes you WORK for your survival, and i couldn't be happier about it.
Overall, this game, from 2014 mind you, DEFINETLY DESERVES A TRY, the graphics still hold up to standards, with the added benefit that it's and old game, so it runs well on old hardware (by today's standards), the AI it's better than that of some of the new tittles, the mechanics are really fun to interact with and, in my opinion, add a sense of immersion that any other game hardly ever come close to achive, the overall atmosphere it's CRUSHINGLY DENSE, there wasn't a single moment in which i felt absolutely, 100% safe, and the Story it's definitely worth looking into.
