I love this game so much. It's simple, challenging, has charming retro graphics, and is a love letter to ninja games everywhere. Very much like Shinobi for Genesis, only with a lot more complexity. Instead of running right up to and mowing down enemies like in similar games, you're much more safe if you steathily assasinate someone. But did you ♥♥♥♥ up your assassination attempt, and now have to go toe to toe with a samurai wielding a katana? Then don't expect to just run right in and chop them up. This game doesn't treat its AI enemies like mindless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who can't hit a target if their lives depended on it (which they do). No, if you're forced to fight an enemy face to face., they will put up a fight. They will block your attacks. They will strike when your guard is down, and a lot of times, they will kill you (depending on how and where they hit you this may mean you getting chopped in half).

I liked this game within the first five minutes of playing it, but the moment that made me realize I loved the game was on stage 0-3. You start out in a forest and you're walking towards a tower or castle of some sort. You can walk straight ahead through the front door, which is what I did the first time, and you can succeed in your mission this way just as easily. However, when I died (and you will die a lot) I was running and jumping around (Who doesn't love double jump flipping around randomly?) and I found myself landing on a tree branch. So I jumped from tree branch to tree branch until I reached the last one, a branch right outside the second floor of the tower. It's awesome little stuff like this that makes this 2d side scrolling stealth ninja assassin game a little less linear. Let me be clear, however, this game IS linear. It's not Castlevania Symphony of the Night. You have some options on how to beat the level, but you must beat the level before you move on to the next.

The game is good enough as is and worth the price tag, and I am extremely excited to see what additions this game adds down the road.

My personal suggestions on what could make this game go from the 8.5 out of 10 that it is now to a 9 or 9.5 are as follows (And I'm suggesting these more so because I know devs read these, not so much for a potential buyer): Different character choices, or at least costume choices. Different sword skins. More variation in the levels. It doesn't ALL need to seem like ancient Japanese forest or castle. More execution animations. And equally important, but the one I care about the least, fix the typos. I can't tell if they're going for a stereotypical Asian butchering English or the devs aren't native English speakers and don't notice, but either way it should be fixed. If they're going for the stereotype "I must find blue key for door" it doesn't make sense. Why are they speaking butchered English in what is clearly Japan or China? "I must find the blue key if I want to go in this door" would sound much better. Or, keep the butchered English, but put Japanese (Or Chinese, not sure which it's supposed to be) above it to let the reader know "Oh, I see what they're going for" instead of "Why can't the dev write a sentence properly"?

Bit of a ramble there, but it is something that should be addressed. As for whether or not you should get it? Yes. Absolutely. It's even better with a controller. It's also a lot more fun than the videos and pictures make it out to be.

8.5/10
