Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Alien Vendetta, one of the most influential community-made megawads ever. It was release in 2001, but we’re going to be reviewing the 2002 release that was approved for Compet-n speedrunning, and we’ll be ignoring the 2016 Black Label version for expediency’s sake. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover with this one, so I’ll limit my opening comments to this: Alien Vendetta was one of the main reasons I started this show. Outside of Doomworld, you’re not really going to find anyone who knows anything about Alien Vendetta, and YouTube is particularly devoid of discussions related to non-vanilla Doom, so I set out to create a show that could sing the praises of special Doom wads while giving potential new players a glimpse of what they’re getting into. Alien Vendetta, I believe, is particularly deserving of this treatment. I don’t do this often, but in this video I’m going to display the level designer of each map because I want to spotlight the authors both for their prowess and for their distinct personalities.

Alien Vendetta is a very important wad to the Doom community, as it spans the gap between the first generation of fervent Doom-fans-turned-mappers and the modern contingent of artists and designers who have helped define the standard of the contemporary megawad. If you're interested in the history of Doom mapping and want to know more about Alien Vendetta's place in it, I HIGHLY recommend "The Roots of Doom Mapping: An Evolution of Level Design Through the Most Influential WADs Ever Made" by Doomworld's Not Jabba.

YouTube's auto-generated chapters can go to hell :)
