Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Doom II, id Software’s 1994 follow-up to one of the most groundbreaking video games of all time. I only missed it by about a week, but happy belated birthday, Doom II! Also, confession time: I first played Doom II in 2017, through DOSBox on Steam, keyboard only, on Hurt Me Plenty. Since then, I’ve been on something of a Doom pilgrimage, learning about the community, playing a plethora of fan-made wads, and using my freaking mouse. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t have as long of a history with this game as probably most of my audience, but I’ve spent a lot of time with Doom II, it’s a huge part of my life now, and this series wouldn’t exist if I didn’t love it to death. So, how does the legendary work of Petersen, Romero, McGee, Hall, and Green hold up today? Let’s find out.
