All this stuff is here, why aren’t we utilising it?
Phil Pollard - Historic England
Across the various educational and skills reforms of the past 4 years we have seen a number of new governments funded or supported initiatives develop; such as Skills Boot Camps, Sector Work Based Academies and the Lifetime Skills Guarantee. We have also seen some flexibilities introduced to the apprenticeship system, with the introduction of flexi-job apprenticeships.
These initiatives have the potential to ease some of the challenges the sector faces in delivering skills development, particularly with regards to the “short term-ness” of work cycles. However, so far, we have seen little to no use of such initiatives across archaeology and the wider heritage sector.
Historic England’s long term strategic vision is for a heritage sector that works within and across disciplines and collaborates with each other, in the true sense of word: co-delivering initiatives that build skills and develop careers.
In this session we will examine some of the initiatives identified above and discuss what might be needed to make them work, which is likely to mean sharing the risk between organisations, as well as the resultant benefits.
