It has emerged that 288 military dogs have been put down by the MOD in the past three years. Figures for January 2010 to June this year show 81 were due to old age, 61 had osteoarthritis and 33 had dangerous temperaments.

The Ministry of Defence insists its dogs are only ever put down as a last resort.

The MoD says it makes every effort to re-home the animals and those that are put down are judged to have a condition that would impact on their quality of life.
