INTRODUCTION:
You once were a Roman Centurion, a brave warrior who knew no fear. When you died on the battlefield with courage and honor, you thought you would know peace and rest for all eternity.
But when the evil Neff, Lord of the Underworld, abducted the beautiful Athena, her father Zeus searched for a warrior strong and brave enough to rescue her. He chose you... and brought you back from the grave! And since you would be battling creatures of supernatural power, Zeus gave you supernatural power of your own.
Within certain of the enemy creatures were magical Spirit Balls. If you defeated those enemies and took the Spirit Balls, you would gain the powers of the Altered Beast... the power to transform into creatures of awesome strengths and abilities!
REVIEW:
Okay, so you are actually a dead Roman Centurion, but have been brought back from the grave by Zeus for rescuing his daughter. To get to Zeus daughter, Athena, you have to beat the crap out of the minions of the evil Neff, before you can defeat Neff himself and free Athena.
The name of the game, Altered Beast, is because by beating up the white two-headed wolves you will set free Spirit Balls, which you have to collect three of for transforming into different Beasts. Shortly after you have transformed into a Beast, Neff will show up and send one of his evil minions to battle you. If you win you will proceed to the next level.
The game is a 2D beat’em up but it also has platform elements. There are five levels, and as it is an arcade conversion it also has credits and continues, but don’t wast them because level 5 is much tougher than the other levels, and you will need to use a lot of credits here.
The scrolling routine is pretty slow and jerky, but it doesn’t really affect the gameplay, because you always wander left and right beating up monsters. In the original arcade game the scrolling is also very slow, but off course not as jerky as here. The gameplay in this version is actually pretty good, and there is intro, outro, and lots of cool music. The game is made in full color, but it is missing the final touch in being perfect. Some black borders around the characters, instead of keeping the colors strictly in attribute blocks, would have looked much better.
The Spectrum version also features a 2-player simultaneous mode like the original arcade game.
The game was published by Activision Inc in 1989.
