The House with the Clock in its Walls had five different FX studios working on it, and hundreds of artists between them. Director Eli Roth has a love of traditional practical effects, but the scope of the project demanded more than would have been achievable without CG.

Hybride VFX
Hybride, for example, was tasked with animating scenes in which one actor transformed into another, or a dog transformed into a rat. They drew inspiration from the VFX work in The Mask to give the transformations a cartoonish feel while still using very detailed models.

Beyond making the film’s magic and spells real, VFX artists literally brought its objects to life, too. From a moving stained glass window, to living topiaries, the house itself was made into a character.

Mavericks VFX
Mavericks VFX was responsible for animating the living Laz-E-Boy that delivers much of the movie's comedy relief. Without giving it any human features, they showed emotion and character through its actions and expressions. By the end of the project, some artists and Mavericks had gotten quite attached to it.

Folks FX
Folks FX handled one of the most memorable scenes in the film, where the protagonists battle a patch of bloodthirsty pumpkins. The jack-o-lanterns had unique appearances and personalities, and their models had to be designed with enough detail for up-close viewing. Their spitting animations were fine-tuned to look as organic as possible.

Rodeo FX
The centerpiece of the house was the clock room itself. It was created with a mixture of physical set pieces and VFX gears that Rodeo FX had to work around the existing system. By studying real clockwork, the studio was able to make their work believable and seamlessly integrate it with the existing set.
