Tonya Harding
Almost all the difficulties that had to be overcome with VFX in the movie came from the fact that Tonya Harding was a world-class ice skater and the actress that plays her isn’t. Even though Margot Robbie trained 5 days a week for 5 months she could never do a triple axle followed by a double toe loop so a professional ice skater had to be used as her double.

The Stadiums
The crew filmed all the skating shots in 2 different stadiums, these stadiums were scanned and the information was used to create 4 different Full CG models.
These stadiums were, of course, empty during filming so the Eight VFX team created a CG audience for each stadium, and depending on the event and location the audience size was bigger or smaller.

Face scan
In order to be able to substitute the professional ice skaters face for Margot’s, Eight VFX had to have a detail 3d model of Margot’s face and facial expressions, for this they employed a French company called EISKO who brought a portable rig to the Atlanta shoot and set up a little studio. They scanned Margot’s face to produce a CG model with textures for a neutral pose and two more make up looks that were captured on set.

Positioning
In order to transition from shots of Margot to her double and vice versa, the crew needed to know their exact positions whilst they skated. to accomplish this they set up 6 witness cameras around the rink and time synced them to the 35mm.
To know where the skating double face was, its direction, speed, and angle, the double wore black markers on her face and an orange ball on the top of her head.

Face transplant
So now they had the CG head and the exact position of where it had to go they couldn’t just switch one for the other, it had to be edited frame by frame with animators changing the model’s facial expressions to the ones Margot previously acted out in front of a blue screen. They then added texture, lighting, and motion blur.
