AMD appears to be struggling significantly in the discrete GPU market against NVIDIA, according to recent data from Valve's Steam hardware survey and Amazon US sales figures for June. NVIDIA's newer Blackwell GPUs are rapidly gaining traction among Steam users, with the RTX 5070 being the top performer among them, and even the high-end RTX 5090 registering in the rankings. In stark contrast, none of AMD's new RDNA 4 graphics cards, including the RX 9070 XT, have achieved enough market share to appear individually in Steam's survey, being relegated to the "other" category.

The trend continues in Amazon's US sales data, although less severely for AMD. While the RX 9070 XT does appear in the top sellers, it lags behind its NVIDIA rivals. The bestselling GPU on Amazon in June was the NVIDIA RTX 5070, followed by the RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5070 Ti. The RX 9070 XT was the fourth most popular, but other RDNA 4 models, like the vanilla RX 9070, sold significantly fewer units and didn't make the top ten. Overall, NVIDIA captured a dominant 70% of sales and nearly 80% of revenue on Amazon.

This situation is particularly perplexing and concerning for consumers. Despite the RX 9070 XT offering comparable performance to the RTX 5070 Ti (excluding DLSS 4) and benefiting from recent driver improvements, NVIDIA's card continues to outsell it, often at a higher price point. This occurs even amidst NVIDIA's own reported technical issues and driver challenges with the RTX 50 series, which have cast a negative light on Blackwell.

The baffling sales disparity, where AMD's seemingly strong value proposition isn't translating into significant market share, suggests a challenging uphill battle for Team Red. Hopes for AMD to reclaim a substantial portion of the desktop GPU market are diminishing. NVIDIA's continued dominance, especially in mid-range GPU sales, indicates that despite its own hurdles, it maintains a strong hold on the market, making meaningful competition from AMD a steep climb.
