Steam has introduced a new in-game performance monitor within its overlay, offering a convenient alternative to third-party tools like MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner for displaying system statistics. This built-in feature allows users to monitor various performance metrics directly while playing games, providing a quick visual aid for understanding system behavior without the need for additional software installations or complex configurations.
To activate this feature, users simply need to open the Steam application, navigate to the "In-Game" settings, and locate the "show performance monitor" option. Here, they can select the desired on-screen location for the overlay, with the top-left corner often being the preferred choice. A customizable key combination, such as Shift + Backspace, must also be set to toggle the performance monitor on or off during gameplay.
The Steam performance monitor offers flexible display options, allowing users to select the "Performance detail level" from a dropdown menu, ranging from minimal information to a comprehensive view of system stats. Users can also choose to display graphs for average/minimum frames per second (FPS) and CPU utilization per core. Further customization includes adjusting text scaling, contrast, saturation, and crucially, the opacity of the overlay, enabling users to make it subtly visible or more prominent as desired.
While not intended to fully replace advanced tools like MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner, Steam's new performance monitor provides an excellent, easy-to-use option for gamers seeking real-time system insights. Its quick setup and integrated nature make it particularly appealing for those who prefer a streamlined experience without installing and configuring separate monitoring applications.
