The "Stop Killing Games" campaign is a consumer-led initiative advocating for legal protections to ensure digital video games remain playable even after publishers end official support. This movement gained significant traction following Ubisoft's decision to delist "The Crew" in 2024, rendering the purchased game inaccessible. The campaign highlights a controversial clause in Ubisoft's EULA, which mandates users to "destroy all copies" upon termination, sparking outrage over digital ownership rights.
The campaign's core argument, particularly in the European Union and UK, is that terms allowing publishers to unilaterally terminate access to purchased games are unfair under EU consumer protection laws. They propose legislative changes that would obligate publishers to provide means for continued playability, such as enabling offline modes or supporting player-run servers, when a game's official support ends. The movement emphasizes that this is not a demand for indefinite server operation but rather a call for legal obligations to preserve games.
Despite accumulating over one million signatures, which legally requires the European Commission to consider the petition, the initiative faces strong opposition from the video game industry. Trade associations like Video Games Europe argue that such mandates would increase development costs, pose legal and safety risks, and stifle innovation. They maintain that consumers acquire a license, not ownership, of digital games.
The "Stop Killing Games" campaign, championed by Ross (Accursed Farms), aims to set a global precedent for consumer rights in digital media. However, it has encountered significant opposition, notably from YouTuber "Pirate Software," who is accused of spreading misinformation and actively undermining the petition. This ongoing debate underscores a fundamental tension between traditional notions of product ownership and the evolving digital licensing landscape, pushing consumers to critically examine the terms of their digital purchases.
