An Animation Nerd Stumbles into the Uncanny Valley (Harold HALIBUT Part 1)

So, back when this game first dropped I saw a lot of people screaming that it was stop motion... as an animation nerd let me set the record straight, it's very obviously not lol Now, all the sets and character models WERE make practically like you would for a stop motion film, hence why they look so real. BUT after that they were then photo-scanned and animated fully in Unity. It kind of falls into the uncanny valley for me because of this, my brain sees these things, expects them to move like stop motion because things look so photo real, but the game is animated on 1s at 60fps instead of on 2s or 4s at 24-30fps and the movement of the animations looks more mocapped than key framed. None of this is necessarily a bad thing, it just hurts my animator brain a bit, especially since they tried so hard to make the facial animation look stop motion. I kind of wish they stuttered the framerate like A Midnight Walk, another stop motion inspired game that used photo-scans of its assets, it would have been less jarring in my opinion. Oh well, I'll do my best to get over this mental hurdle and enjoy the game for what it is and not what it could have been, since I am curious to see where the story goes~
