Motivation:
From the day chatbots such as ELIZA took its first step into the uncanny valley and PARRY which passed the Turing Test, conversational agents have fascinated us time and time again and have now integrated themselves in the human society as part of the norms in many businesses, governments and institutions. Task-Oriented Dialouge Systems, particularly, play a pragmatic role in automating complex human interactions. Roughly based on "Recent Advances and Challenges in Task-oriented Dialog System" by Zheng Zhang, Ryuichi Takanobu, Qi Zhu, Minlie Huang and Xiaoyan Zhu, this presentation outlines the history of thoughts and ideas behind the Task-Oriented Dialouge System architecture and review the contemporary challenges facing their researchers and users.
