Anatoli Bugorski’s accident happened on July 13, 1978 at the U-70 synchrotron in Protvino, Soviet Union (about 60 miles south of Moscow). The U-70 was the largest particle accelerator in the world at that time, built in the 1960s.

CERN, in Switzerland, runs the famous Large Hadron Collider, but that came much later (operational in 2008). Bugorski’s beam strike was decades earlier and at a different facility entirely.
