Juan from Uncasual Games was so free to answer a few questions about their upcoming game "Ancient Cities".

The Questions & Answers:

1. Maybe as a starter, what did inspire you to make this game?

We are Ancient History passionate, and as gamers we like strategy games and city builders.
We always wanted to do a Pc game, so when we had the opportunity we went for it.
Also, we love to visit ancient and archaeological sites. When in those sites, we can't stop to recreating them in our minds. Now we have the opportunity to create them virtually and bring them to life.

2. What was the biggest challenge during development so far?

The biggest challeneges are probably to come yet. But I would say that the stress of working full time at home, not knowing if at the end all that hard work will worth the effort. For us the greenlight success was a incredible relief in that sense.

3. Will there be some kind of PvE elements like fighting another tribe, trying to grab your land.

There will be other tribes around, and warfare events with that tribes will exist, triggered by them or by you.

4. Can you try to conquer more land by force or only by peaceful expansion?

The concept of conquer in Neolithic times, peaceful or not, could be somewhat different than ours, if existing at all.
Neolithic settlements were reduced in size, and they probably didn't need to conquer land. For this period warfare will be more like raids to stole resources, people, or even extermination.
Future expansions, if we can get there, like Bronze Age will offer something closer to our concept of conquer.

5. Are there any plans for the implementation of larger scale war in any kind yet (Multi-Settlement Factions)?

There are plans for large scale war for expansions in periods where that kind of war has historical sense.

6. What kinds of (predatory) animals idid you include already/will you include and how can you interact with those?

Wild animals will enter and leave the player city map at any moment. Europe in those times had wild animals that are not anymore today, like lions, wich were aproaching its extinction in Europe. Of course wolves or bears. We don't know how many will be in the first release, but we will be adding this kind of generic content in free updates after release.

7. How would you rate the difficulty of securing the base survival of your people?

There will not be levels of dificulty, but the player will be able to switch off different kind of events, like warfare, famines, diseases, etc...
With all of these turned on we will do our best to have a game difficult to beat.

8. Will there be famines, diseases, or other natural influences?

To properly handle this events will be key for the survival experience, and one of the handicaps of become sedentary if turned on in the difficulty options.

9. Will there be crimes among your own people like murder or thievery among your folk.

Citizens has their own will. Murder or thievery is still not implemented, but planed.

10. Will you be able to customize visuals of your settlements in later stages of the game, e.g. add decorations etc?

Very likely.

11. How will the game be priced when it comes out?

40 euros for the final release.

12. I've already read that there will not be multiplayer at launch. However would you say that there could be a Coop Mode somewhere in the future?

AC uses an intensive time acceleration controlled by the player that does not fit well with multiplayer.
This game is closer to a city builder with strategy elements than it is to a base camp game like AoE.
If the game works very well and we have funding inthe future we could consider a spin off, or a multiplayer mode with fixed time, but we will not compromise single player exprience in any case. Multiplayer is not a priority for us at this moment.

13. Is there some kind of endgame experience planned or will it be building up and growing big as far as possible?

A final event will be triggered somewhat for each age if there is not an age to continue, that will inform the player that the last technology of that age has been discovered.
The player can decide to keep playing beyond this point on a technological static world.

14. In how far did you implement physics, and do they play a role for your game?

We have some plans for this, but more for nice effects than to play a key role in the game.

15. And finally, how do you think about the reaction of the community towards your idea?

We didn't expect such an awesome reaction. As we said before, Greenlight was an incredible experience for us, and a way to gain great confidence in what we are doing.
We also feel that start the community even in this early stage of development can be very beneficial for the game, as we can incorporate a lot of feedback early in the development.
The amount of support and good feeling we are receiving is just awesome, and we want to thank you all for this.
