Andrew Ambrose - Way Far Beyond (YM3812+Konami SCC+007232 Original Song)
7I was gonna have a new song out in October, but I wasn't feeling up to it. Thankfully, I have been able to make a new song to start off November, and it turned out quite well. I previously extracted some YM3812/OPL2 instruments from Toaplan's Hi Sho Zame/Flying Shark months ago, and I was playing around with them recently when I came up with a neat chord progression reminiscent of Toaplan's music from that period (particularly Tatsujin/Truxton). So, I decided to do a song in tildearrow's Furnace tracker utilizing the YM3812, which I hadn't worked with before. I also felt inclined to use the bell from Taito's Bubble Bobble, which used the YM3526/OPL, since I was always very fond of how it sounded. Since I didn't want to stress myself out over the drums, I decided to use a fairly standard drum pattern utilizing samples from Metal Slug, which made me decide to utilize the Konami SCC and the Konami 007232, which were both used alongside the YM3812 in Konami's Akumajou Dracula/Haunted Castle. The 007232 handled the drum samples while the SCC allowed me to use wavetables to harmonize with the leading Bubble Bobble bells (try saying that five times fast). I got creative with that and utilized one of the discrete wavetables from Namco's Galaxian, which ended up being a perfect fit with the Bubble Bobble bell. Coming up with the melody and chords, I had in mind a song from a scrolling-shooting game plus Outride a Crisis from Sega's Super Hang-On. So all in all, this is a song with a mix of Truxton, Bubble Bobble, Galaxian, and Super Hang-On! What a crazy thought! The song itself did take plenty of work to complete since I had a little bit of trouble deciding the other chord progressions, but I did manage to make something that worked, and I like the vibe I've concocted with this.
