Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm - 1cc
My clear of Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm. What a mouthful of a title. I think "Bari" is a reference to the game's artist or something. Anyway, this is a pretty fun shooter and my first clear of a Sega CD game ever. I find Sega CD and PC Engine CD quaint. The actual games only look about on par with good SNES games, but you'll have these nifty anime cutscenes and these rad 90s rock tracks that sound like an old Casio keyboard with 90s samples. Like they wanted to push the limits and go extreme, but could only advance about a baby step forward.
What's interesting about this game is that the primary shot sucks balls for the most part, and the charge shot can be either overpowered or useless....so it kind of balances out once you know what weapons to use in what situations. For example, the homing snake will take out the first boss in TWO freaking hits instantly. Try using it on the fifth boss though, and it gets tangled up with the bosses projectiles and barely does any damage. But yeah, you pretty much always want to be charging your shot since even some of the most popcorn-looking enemies on screen will often overstay their welcome, unless you use a charge shot that then clears everything like a samurai sword through spreadable margarine.
For most situations I found the charged homing snake was very strong....except it's sometimes retarded and will home in on a part of an enemy part that's NOT a hitbox lmao. It's janky and weird, but it has a kind of charm. Other times you want the green laser which is strong as hell but provides no back cover. So a little light routing and practice is needed from stage 5 onward to have a solid game plan.
At full power you turn from a ship into a mech which essentially acts as a shield, but has a much bigger sprite that makes dodging a bit trickier. It's a nice mechanic and makes for a good beginner/intermediate skill level.
This playthrough went very well until the second part of the final boss. Since I really only play for survival clears I usually have so many resources from the levels I took the time to actually learn that I pretty much always tank final bosses with bombs and lots of stocks lol. I'm a scrub, but hey, I'm having fun.
