It's pretty fun to animate a character in Unreal Engine, and the Mixamo assets from Adobe are easy to import and get going.
Step 1 - Import a skeleton and animations from Mixamo into UE4
Step 2 - Set up an animation blendspace that will blend the animations together based on direction and speed
Step 3 - Set up an animation blueprint that will update the blendspace with the direction and speed each frame.
