Annihilation is the movie to go see this weekend and the latest fom director of Ex Machina The movie deals with a group going into a mysterious biosphere called The Shimmer to find out whats going on after a failed mission cause everyone in the previous group to die except Leena's husband Cain . So now its up to her and the rest to find out what happened to everyone on that failed mission and what the shimmer is and its purpose. Before we jump into the ending a quick backstory on The shimmer, it started after something from space came crashing down onto a lighthouse, more than likely an alien ship or form and thus the biosphere formed. So i will only be talking about the ending and will make a video later this week talking more in depth as to what exactly is happening and what it all means. So in the end we have leena be the only one of the group to make it out alive and go back to her husband who up until this point we arent sure if hes a clone as a result of the mutation going on in the shimmer. we do however start to question as well at this point if this in fact is the real leena or not as well . so heres my take, i believe that the husband is in fact a clone and that the real husband did commit suicide as we saw after seeing all the mutations happening on the video they left behind. the new clone is sent out there to trick lena into coming into the biosphere as well to try and find answers all to end up being infected by the alien form or cloned as well too depending on how you viewed it. theres also the possibility that Cain wanted leena to find the video of him commiting suicide so leena knows that it isn't the real cain who came back. In the end of the film we see leena torch down the shimmer and come back to the cain who we now know is a duplicate and as they embrace we see the shimmer in their eyes. this hints at wheter leena is in fact a clone herself as well or possibly just infected. she has now come to accept this cain because the alien form has more of a hold on her and wants to survive so thus the two will continue the annihilation that started in area x. This is one possibility another that ive seen floating around and that is that lena is still the normal lena and the clone is dead but that her husband is in fact a clone and she knows this but she decides to stay with him because she knows this clone will not know of here cheating. a much more bleak ending yes but either way the alien form gets what it wanted and that is a chance to survive and still be able to ultimately reproduce if you will.
