The basic tips to give you are:

1. Play with care and take your time if you have to.
2. Remember to use the Y button to use your items. Plenty of times I forgot it existed..the best times to use it are probably all at once when your board gets filled up.
3. Try to get as much couplers combined as you can (helps toward the 100 coupler achievement), it also makes your life much easier since by getting rid of one of the colors attached to a coupler, it gets rid of the other one as well.
4. Remember that pieces can be connected diagonally as well!

I believe you also want to aim for a higher score because that is what progress the levels, so sequences are helpful!
