The Alternative European Summit, held in Brussels, Belgium, 30 to 31 March 2012, addressed the urgency of building alternatives towards opening a dialogue and a search for convergence between all forces and sectors which are fighting against austerity and which want to build another kind of Europe.

The Crises in the European Union continue to intensify and deepen. The policies that are being implemented — unconditional support for the financial markets, austerity and serious violations of popular sovereignty — are ineffective and aggravate the burden of the debt. These policies are imposed in an increasingly authoritarian manner. A system of humiliating surveillance of countries is set up together with the installation of governments of un-elected technicians, peoples' sovereignties are affected and parliaments ignored.

At the same time, widespread resistance is growing -- with the spread of protest strikes, and occupations protesting the devastating cuts and demanding social development, real democracy and solidarity.
