This is the fan-remake of what I believe to be one of the most obscure Metroid games. The original Metroid II: Return of Samus was a GameBoy game that had many improvements over the original Metroid on the NES, but it was still largely held back by it's weak hardware. This remake was in development for well over a decade and it was set out to bring Metroid 2 to the quality standards of other Metroid games like Metroid: Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission. In the end, it fully surpassed those two games together and is almost on the same quality level as Super Metroid, if not higher.
It came out some time before Nintendo's own official remake of Metroid 2 did, which was called Metroid 2: Samus Returns. Both of the remakes are great on their own, but I personally prefer AM2R, and not only because it takes so much after Zero Mission, but also because of the tremendous quality it achieved, especially since it was made by only a single person in the span of a decade.
For this longplay, I made sure to get 100% of all of the items in the game collected since it's just that easy to do and because it's my absolute favorite Metroid game of them all.

After the events of the first Metroid game in which Samus defeated Mother Brain and stopped the Space Pirates from reproducing Metroids for use as biological weapons, Planet SR388, the homeworld to Metroids, seemingly gave no signs of Metroid life when the Galactic Federation's scanners failed to detect any Metroids on the planet. The Research Team was soon sent to the site to study the planet and it's eco-system, and after a fairly short amount of time, contact with them had been lost. A Search & Rescue team comprised of elite soldiers serving in the Galactic Federation was sent to investigate the situation, and most importantly, search for the missing research team members and rescue them. It didn't take long until contact was lost with it as well, making it pretty clear that the Metroid threat is still very much present on the planet. This left the Galactic Federation with no choice but to sent out a lone bounty hunter to do the job, and it just so happened that there was only one true candidate with the right expertise and experience for the job - Samus Aran. The Galactic Federation sends out Samus to search for both of the teams and to eradicate the Metroid threat, once and for all.
While exploring the depths of the planet as Samus, you will encounter various structures left by the extinct Chozo race. There'll be plenty of mysteries about them and the Metroids to find as well as a healthy amount references to the other games in the series. Along the way, you'll be recovering gear for your power suit left by the Chozo in order to explore deeper into the planet and you'll be blasting a lot of Metroids, since the primary goal of this game is to eliminate the Metroid threat. They will come in several forms and these forms will have several variations depending on how grown the Metroid is, all of which come with their own advantages and disadvantages. You will have to strategically plan how you will approach them, since they aren't always easy to deal with and quite a few of them will require you to search for specific ways of tackling them.
As I've mentioned it before, the game takes heavily after Metroid: Zero Mission. If you remember that game, Samus was rather heavy as her falling speed was great but so was her walking/running speed as well. The graphics also take after that same game, but they are vastly improved and overall slightly less stylized.

This is definitely an amazing game, worthy of all the praise it gets. And this is the second entry in the main Metroid series that I checked off my list, there's just about two more longplays left before I am done. Super Metroid is going to be a long one.
