I finally figured out why this happens. Cancelling the start of boost hoop stores the charge for later, so you can interrupt the pause that normally happens, effectively getting rid of it. The ledge grab at the end has nothing to do with how this works. If anything, it shows that you keep your stored boost even if something like that happens.
