Welcome to Deconstruction Gaming’s Guide to Gaming Terms. In this video we will explore the acronym API. So what does API mean? API stands for Application Programming Interface.
An API is used to connect or communicate with complex programming systems. The API exposes the functionality of these systems and allows a game programmer access to the features of the tool or software. Sometimes referred to as libraries or frameworks, the API is often linked to a software or platform used in game development. A well-known API is DirectX, allowing games to access hardware through a common interface. An API allows a programmer to use the features of a software without the need of the internal details. This can also allow those internal details to change but the API to remain consistent.
