Welcome to Deconstruction Gaming’s Guide to Gaming Terms. In this video we will explore the term Pre-order. So what does Pre-order mean? Pre-order is buying a game in advance of publication.
A pre-order does not give early access, it started as a way to reserve a game before release. Players could guarantee their copy of a game that was hard to find, sold out, or had limited availability. A game Pre-order would often have bonus, both in the box and in the game. With digital distribution, game access is no longer limited, the reserve aspect of the Pre-order is less of an incentive. With a theoretical unlimited supply of digital editions, some companies moved limited or special editions along with game perks into the Pre-order process. Pre-order also includes retailer specific bonus items and player backlash at the elevated costs of these special editions.
