As the name implies, forked off warsow. I just found out today in a QC WC livestream. The game is available on steam for free. The main differences I noticed so far aside from the logo and name changes are that they removed the login system, match maker and the html window in the main menu which was good, the main menu used to lag like heck for me.
It still retains a lot of the old bugs such as the laggy movers (even in offline tutorial!), "sort of latency compensation on rocket launcher but completely absent on other projectile weapons" and the finicky client warping on stairs/small surfaces (this is much more pronounced on Xonotic though - Unlike Xonotic though, which was built upon a major expansion of the Quake 1 engine, War§ow iirc was made on a modified Quake 2 engine).
