Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC character Aquaman. It is produced by DC Studios, Atomic Monster, and The Safran Company, with distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures. This movie serves as the sequel to "Aquaman" (2018) and marks the 15th and final installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by James Wan and features a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, developed from a story concept by Wan, Johnson-McGoldrick, Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, and Jason Momoa. The cast includes Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, alongside Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman.
Momoa proposed a storyline for an Aquaman sequel during the production of the initial film. While Wan initially avoided rushing into a sequel, he eventually agreed to oversee its development in January 2019. Johnson-McGoldrick signed on as the screenwriter a month later, and Wan's return as director was confirmed in August 2020. Wan expressed his intention to expand upon the world of Aquaman and announced the sequel's title in June 2021. Filming took place in the United Kingdom, Hawaii, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and New Zealand, beginning in late June 2021 and concluding in January 2022.
"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is set for release in the United States on December 20, 2023.
Plot
Several years after the events of the first film, Arthur Curry/Aquaman is compelled to safeguard Atlantis and his loved ones from impending destruction when an ancient power is unleashed. David Kane/Black Manta obtains the cursed Black Trident, setting off a series of events that forces Arthur to seek an unlikely ally: his brother Orm.

Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman: The half-Atlantean/half-human king of Atlantis who possesses supersonic swimming abilities and the ability to command aquatic life.
Patrick Wilson as Orm Marius: Arthur's Atlantean half-brother and the former king of Atlantis, imprisoned for his crimes against the kingdom.
Amber Heard as Mera: The Queen of Atlantis, Arthur's wife, and mother of Arthur Jr. She has the power to control water.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta: A ruthless pirate and high-seas mercenary who uses an Atlantean armored suit and wields the powerful Black Trident. He seeks revenge on Arthur for the death of his father.
Nicole Kidman as Atlanna: The mother of Arthur and Orm, and the former queen of Atlantis.
Returning from "Aquaman" (2018) are Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, the king of Xebel and Mera's father; Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, a marine biologist obsessed with finding Atlantis; and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Arthur's father, and a lighthouse keeper. Additionally, the cast includes Vincent Regan as Atlan, the first king of Atlantis; Jani Zhao as Stingray; Indya Moore as Karshon; Ricardo Molina as Reporter #4; Grant Huggair as a Surface dweller; Tianyi Kiy as US Navy; Judy Blackett as a Dignitary; and Pilou Asbæk in an undisclosed role.
Music:
Rupert Gregson-Williams was confirmed to return as the composer for the sequel in August 2021, having previously composed the score for the first film.
Future:
In December 2022, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Warner Bros. was contemplating concluding the Aquaman film series and potentially recasting Momoa as the character Lobo following "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." In January 2023, Momoa stated that he would always consider himself Aquaman but also expressed interest in portraying other characters. Later that month, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Safran mentioned the possibility of Momoa reprising his role in the DCU, but no definitive decision had been reached. It was clarified that if Momoa were cast as Lobo, he would not continue to portray Aquaman in the DCU. Gunn confirmed that "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," along with "The Flash," would lead into the DCU's inaugural film, "Superman: Legacy" in 2025. Wan also indicated that the second film would set the stage for a sequel and expressed some interest in directing it after taking a substantial break.
