After coming across an Arduino gear indicator post which I thought was really cool in ClubRSX, http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?t=1009210 I wanted to make one too. I contacted the poster and he was kind enough to share his code.

In the end I basically modified the code from this tutorial.
http://www.hacktronics.com/Tutorials/arduino-and-7-segment-led.html
Used a Teensy 3.1 as I had one lying around and it's small size is good for the car. Wiring for the Teensy and led display was done by Danny the Man, as my soldering's hopeless.

Tested for a few days to fine tune accuracy and came across a couple of instances of wrong reading. However, this has since been fixed with some Sugru hacking. :)

Parts used:
6 x Hall Effect Sensors (A3144) http://www.ebay.com/itm/321640382378
6 x 10k ohm resistors
7 segment display (already had one in an Arduino kit)
2 x 220 ohm resistors
An Arduino (I used a Teensy 3.1)
A rare earth Neodymium magnet.
