On July 12, the first full-color photographs from the Webb Space Telescope revealed previously unseen nebulae, galaxies, and a gassy exoplanet. But Webb only captures infrared and near-infrared light, which the human eye cannot see, so where do these stunning colors come from?
The Webb team's picture developers are entrusted with transforming the telescope's infrared imaging data into some of the most vivid views of the universe we've ever seen. They attribute different infrared wavelengths to visible spectrum hues, such as reds, blues, and yellows. While the Webb team's processed photographs aren't exactly what the telescope saw, they're far from wrong.
