Arena: imperial city dungeon and ending
18th of November, 2022
Years after doing the my original run, around the 21st of July, 2019, I wanted to do a run of the game again but I wanted to try to find a way to make an effective fisting character, as my last one was incredibly weak.
This character, called Fucker, is a Redguard Ranger who ended up being pretty enjoyable to play. One problem i had with my previous character, Sir Punches Stuff the Breton Monk, was the squishyness. Monk has one of the smallest health gains of the warrior classes and is unable to wear armor. Monk was alluring to me because fantasy monks usually punch really hard. Enemy monks in arena kicked my ass but I could not do the ass kicking as a monk. The critical hits that I read monks get when fighting unarmed made it seem that it was a planned play style, but it ended up being really weak. When I gain levels as a monk my damage will only be affected by my current strength and whether or not I have done a critical hit, which increase in frequency with my level. I don't 100% know the damage values, but the critical hits didn't seem to make much of a difference in combat, my DPS throughout the run was pretty much the same. To make up for the inability to equip armor, the Monks ability to dodge increase as they level, but this also didn't help as much as plate armor for avoiding damage.
Fucker was made to address Sir Punches Stuff's issues of tankyness and firepower. The ranger class has a unique effect that the others don't have, and that is extra damage per level. From my understanding, I get a flat damage increase for each level I have, so if my damage increase by 1 per level (though It felt a little more than that), then by level 20 I'll be out-damaging the monk in terms of DPS, and by the end of the run I was level 22. The Ranger gets a higher health increase per level than the monk and also has the ability to wear armor, making me much more tanky and this armor could be enchanted as well to boost my attributes. I had hoped to find the Oghma Infinium early on to increase my stats, but I instead ended up acquiring the Skeleton Key, which was really useful in opening magic doors and skipping some riddles. I played a Redguard due to my chance to hit increasing every third level, but the games manual lied and this only applies to daggers and bows, this didn't matter much in the end and I was hitting pretty consistently.
If I revisit this game in the future, I'll probably try making an even stronger unarmed character. I'll play as a ranger again, but as a wood elf to see if the increase of chance to hit every third level increases my unarmed chance to hit as well. I would also try searching for the Oghma Infinium and spend some time grinding away Fire Daemons in the Crystal Tower to power level to see just how strong my punching can get.
And yes, I am a reverse Ray Gillete
