Situation
Enemy
It is early April 1968. North Vietnamese operations in South Vietnam have intensified following the Tet Offensive in February. Large quantities of supplies continue to move down the Ho Chi Min Trail despite US air and covert land operations. MACV - SOG HQ has also detected a significant increase in SOG operations being intercepted by NVA forces.
Allied SCI Intelligence sources have identified an increase in Soviet support to North Vietnamese forces, particularly in the area of Signals Intelligence. Specific radio intercept and direction finding facilities are believed to have been established near the tri border of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. These are tasked specifically to counter US Air operations and ground force operations operating in Laos.
This has been achieved through the development of real time tactical intelligence co-operation between the Soviet advisors who operate the modern signal locating equipment and the NVA forces that are specifically assigned to react to the Intelligence gained by the Soviets.
As yet the specific locations of these stations are not yet known. It is believed that four to five stations within a 10 Km radius are required to operate the system effectively. Intelligence has narrowed down the likely location to the Ban Dak Krong area of Laos. (15 degrees,2 minutes North; 107 Degrees 16 Minutes East.
Friendly Forces
Due to the source of the Intelligence being received and the success of Australian Special Forces operating in South Vietnam since 1966, the US Secretary of Defence and the Australian Government have agreed to a Combined Operation to locate and eliminate the Soviet signal facilities.
As a result 1 Troop 1 Squadron Australian Special Air Service Regiment has been assigned under operational control of, Command Control Centre (CCC) Kontum, MAC V - SOG, for the duration of Operation Mercury Rising. In addition an Australian Operations Staff Officer, Major Thom is assigned to CCC Kontum to assist with the planning and execution of Mercury Rising and act as the liaison officer with MAC V SOG.
Mission
Operation Mercury Rising is to locate and destroy Soviet Radio Direction Finding (RDF) sites
and capture Soviet Technical Advisers located in the Ban Dak Krong Valley Laos.

Operation Mercury Rising will be conducted in three phases

Insertion and location of Soviet manned RDF sites
Phase 2
Detailed reconnaissance of each RDF site and positive identification of Soviet technical
advisers

Destruction of RDF sites and capture of Soviet advisers
