If you've come from DayZ, PUBG, or even COD & Battlefield, you'll be used to weapons having distinctive sounds, and using the difference in tone and fire-rate to figure out enemies from friends, in Reforger between the US & Soviet soldiers.

In this video I started off with the idea of answering the question "Can You, & How To Identify Enemy Weapon Sounds In Arma Reforger", but when I started to do some testing I realized that at the moment, in the vanilla game at least, this might not be possible in the heat of battle.

In Arma Reforger, separating and identifying those different sounds is a very difficult ask with the standard Assault Rifles such as the M16 & AK. If someone is using a burst M16, that's fairly obvious, but if they're on single fire or have the M16 Carbine on full auto, it's very similar to the AK-74.

The sniper rifles are a similar story, with the M21 sounding almost the same as the SVD.

With the LMG's you do have some distinction - the lower RPM fire rate and deeper sound of the M60 is quite distinctive, but there's a lot of cross-over between the SAW, the RPK-74 & the PKM.

My conclusion is that I wouldn't try and use the sounds of guns in Arma Reforger to figure out who is who, they're just too a-like to make a quick decision in the heat of battle. Look at your map, get on the radio, and get visual confirmation.

Assume all gunfire is hostile until you can confirm otherwise.
