In this guide I'm playing Arma Reforger Conflict, solo, on a locally hosted PC server to test the new update 1.3 stricter rank-controlled weapon loadouts, seeing how long it takes me to be able to put a scope on an AK (the AK-74N with the 1P29 4x scope) and then rank up enough to get the Russian Sniper Rifle - the SVD, with the PSO-14x24 scope.

This update is only live on Experimental Arma Reforger at the moment, but will be coming to public servers soon.

It's a long video, so the results were that I ranked up to Corporal pretty quick by engaging and killing lots of NPCs & then hitting a supply dump, so it took me about 18 minutes to unlock the AK-74N with the 4x scope, but it took about an hour to get to Sergeant to I could unlock the SVD Sniper / Marksman Rifle & it's associated magnified optic.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the iron-sights AK was pretty good at range, and the overall experience of not having optics straight away wasn't that much different from what I normally do.

However, this definitely wasn't more fun - and I was playing on a PC with a nice crisp monitor - using Iron Sights on console, playing on a TV, is a different experience.

I think that BI should re-think this rank system for the weapons. Perhaps stick with withholding the sniper rifles until higher ranks, but I think all soldiers should have the option of at least one magnified optic and weapon when they start a new game, supplies allowing.
