Armored Core (PS1) Caterpillar Only Run - Part 1 - Core Missions/No Human+ (100% Success)
Ladies and Gentleman! Welcome to yet another playthrough of the PS1 Armored Core trilogy beginning with the Original Armored Core where i will challenge myself by playing the entire game with the self imposed restriction where i will only be allowed to use the Caterpillar leg type and just like with the last run, no Human Plus upgrades as well. Now if you watched my previous runs of Armored Core, you will notice that only on very few occasions that i actually used a Caterpillar setup outside when i am forced to use then like on Master Of Arena. This is because with Human Plus upgrades, theres very little reason to actually use Caterpillar when you can use a heavy Humanoid Legs setup while being able to shoot Shoulder Weapons freely. The same somewhat goes for Four Legs with Human Plus as well. Without Human Plus upgrades however, Four Legs and Caterpillar becomes more sought after as one is able to use Shoulder Weapons freely on the ground while the other can use then without any restrictions. The downside of Caterpillars which is easily noticeable is their speed... they are SUUUUUUPER slow BUT, they are also the tankiest parts in your arsenal for legs with then typically having the highest overall defenses,AP and carry capacity on then.
Their speed however is the reason one might feel like the game wasnt built around then especially when the very 1st Armored Core have missions where you gotta do some serious platforming (like on Destroy Floating Mines) to the point i didnt think some missions would be possible with then.
Theres also other reasons why i wanted to do the Armored Core Trilogy with only Caterpillar legs and number 1 is that i wanted to play in a completely different manner that i would usually play the game which i basically would almost never use Caterpillars. The other reason is that i wanted to showcase how Caterpillars fares throught the series as you will be surprised to find out that out of all the Leg types in the game, Caterpillars were the ones to be nerfed in some way or another the hardest as the next games were released.
To my surprise actually the very first nerf to the Caterpillars were their turning speed but in the 1st Armored Core, Caterpillars despite being similar to Heavy Humanoid Legs in defense which have the tradeoff of slow turning speed, Caterpillars actually turn surprisingly fast in here almost as fast as the light Humanoid Legs if you can believe.
Part of the Caterpillar only run i will be doing all the core missions and will be setting up my AC accordingly to the Challenge. The very first thing that is actually a advantage monetarily when using Caterpillars is that since they have built-in Boosters, it saves me money for not having to buy good Boosters or any at all actually. The downside of Caterpillars besides their speed is that they require ALOT of Energy Output which is almost as bad as Four Legs which means not only you will need to use the best Generators jus to use then but also so that your Energy Recharge isnt as slow as a snail to recharge which is actually the very first thing i do as i notice the problem already at the very beginning. Despite all that i still wont settle for having to use Shell Weapons as otherwise i wont make any money doing the missions so the Energy Weapon strat will be used in the beginning as always. Playing with Caterpillar Legs is like playing a completely different type of Armored Core as your approach has to actually be way more strategical almost like to the point of real life Tank Warfare if you really think about it. This becomes way more evident on missions with enclosed spaces where you cant freely use the boosters. You will notice very quickly that once i am able to pimp up my AC with the Best Caterpillar Leg, i dont come even close to being damage significantly on missions at all. For missions with enclosed spaces this is a definitive advantage as you have very little room to dodge in the first place. Some missions will require completely different approaches however and doing platforming with Caterpillars even with the fastest one is still a challenge into itself. While most missions i will be using LC - MOS4545 part as its the best overall, some missions that requires speed can only be completed with the fastest Caterpillar Leg and i found that out the worst way possible during missions XD!!
Note: This is a reupload as the original video had the same problem as previous ones from Armored Core where likes were not being accounted at all. Reuploading solves the issue but it sucks when it happens to a lenghty one.
