Today we are checking out the first Assassin's Creed game on the Steam Deck. The game is installed through Steam and requires no tinkering to launch it. However, out of the box it doesn't support any controller inputs. I had to work around a bunch of different community templates and ultimately was able to make it work using an xbox controller config.

I was also able to play using external Dualshock 4 controller. Assassin's Creed came out in 2007 and was supposed to originally be the next installment in the Prince of Persia series, however ultimately it spinned off into it's own franchise. The game is somewhat heavy for such an old game and while we are able to run at max graphics stable 60 FPS the battery life really takes a hit with the Steam Deck managing only 2 hours.

Reducing quality settings and setting the Steam Deck screen refresh rate to 40Hz gives us another hour of battery life. Assassin's Creed says it supports 1280x800 resolution, however black bars are visible on top and bottom. Perhaps additional tinkering of game files can resolve this issue.

The game is still one of the best Assassin's Creed games despite all it's limitations and is a pretty great grab when on sale!
