In the middle of a series play, what happened the first time round happened again. Assassin's Creed III, although ambitious in what it tried to do - left a bad taste in my mouth and I needed to step away for a while from a series that had frankly run stale since the dizzying highs of series best AC2 and it's follow up Brotherhood.

Black flag tells the story of aspiring pirate Edward Kenway, as he leaves his life and spouse behind for a life of pillaging, drinking and wisecracks in the West Indies. He finds himself pulled in to the conflict between Templars and Assassins by unwittingly putting the former in danger - as well as the free will of mankind, which will surely be controlled by the Templars if they accompish their mission of finding the "observatory" and the tools left by a race long gone.

The one thing immediately noticeable about this game is the sheer size and freedom. I was never short of things to do whilst travelling between islands - from assassination to harpooning, hunting, diving for treasure in shipwrecks and naval combat. Everything that almost worked in AC3 has been smoothed out and the game brings back a key feature from the Ezio trilogy. FUN. The controls are more precise, and less frustrating. The graphics are incredible (for when it was released). The sound is great. Crew shanties will remain earworms for hours. And best of all? It doesn't take 12 hours for the story to get anywhere near interesting.

It's not without it's faults. Are we really still doing tailing missions? Eavesdropping? Or at least finding ways to make these missions different or enjoyable? The first person future parts are TEDIOUS and take you out of the game - and although it wasn't without reason - they could have done something to make these scenes more interesting. The Aveline DLC is absolute cack... uninteresting and a pointless addition. And come on Ubisoft. Much like Rockstar: STOP. MAKING. MULTIPLAYER. A. REQUIREMENT. FOR. PLATINUM.
