Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade - Part 7
Possibly the most ambitious task in video gaming history was/still is trying to remake one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time, that will both live up to expectations and put a modern spin whilst remaining faithful to the source material. For the most part, the first installment was a success.
Story wise the game ranges from shot-for-shot reproduction to brand new material that fills out Midgar and allows you truly explore the city and introduce yourself to its individual inhabitants. For context of scale, Remake takes the first 4 hours of the original, and turns it into a 30 hour campaign on first run (without side content). Sometimes it works wonderfully, as you relive the mako reactor bombing mission, Hardy Daytona bike chase and Corneo's bridal task - othertimes it falls flat with pointless and tedious areas like the collapsed expressway and the plate maintenance area.
New characters and old (but with more depth) range from interesting and likeable (Madame M, Jesse, Leslie, Marle) to downright insufferable and extremely annoying (Roche, Johnny). Dialogue ranges from laughable to genuinely well written and delivered by the voice cast. Some of the filler content leaves you wondering if they could have just put more areas in from the original game (I'd have loved for the reactors to be larger). I really worry about Rebirth in this respect - especially with so many crucial story points on the horizon. Side quests range from enjoyable fights to fetch quests, some fun and some guff.
Remake soars when it comes to other areas - the combat is a joy. It mixes ATB commands with real time action. Each character feels individual and unique, from Cloud's punishing buster sword hack and slash to Tifa being a pure stagger machine with her fists. Materia works as the original and you will have to quickly learn what works with which foe in order to put them away. Hard mode ramps this challenge up past 100 as you are unable to use items or recover MP at save benches and this is an excellent addition for those who wish to challenge themselves. There is also a classic mode for those who want to just focus on ATB whilst the game hacks and slashes for you.
The Intergrade DLC is genuinely great fun for those who want to pad the story further, and is told from Yuffie's perspective. The side quests here are less fetchy and will involve more battle simulator combat, box smashing minigames and the Fort Condor strategy game - which is a great time sink (not approached much in this playthrough).
The soundtrack, sound and graphics are second to none - and I was particularly happy with the way that Nobuo Uematsu's score was treated with respect and expanded upon - leaving me thirsty for some of the tracks in later games.
