Assassin's Creed Unity - Part 10
Whilst not the series low point that ACIII or Revelations was, this was a fucking lazy and clumsy effort from Ubisoft - one that indicates the problem with the games industry and the quantity-over-quality ethos usually carried by annual rehashes like sports games or Call Of Duty. On release, Unity required patches in abundance because it was an absolute mess - patches of considerable size. It is absolutely astounding that there are still glitches remaining 10 years later.
The narrative that takes place throughout the French revolution in the late 1700s could be considered strong. It follows the star-crossed Arno and Elise from their childhood, where Arno's assassin father is killed by Rogue's Shay. Arno is adopted into Elise's family where her father is revealed as a higher up in the Templar order - and after a failure to deliver a message to him on Arno's part that would have warned him, he is killed as part of a Templar plot. The story then centres around Arno progressing through the assassin ranks as he seeks revenge on those involved with the plot. The story has some really high points, such as a hot air balloon chase, a one on one with a friend-turned-enemy in Notre Dame, and an excellent final battle rooted in stealth and emotion. A pity that it is so damn short, possibly because of the tiny and bland map - even with the acceptable Dead Kings epilogue DLC, it clocks in at a woeful 15-20 hours.
The rest of Unity is a ridiculous amount of collectibles, dull glyph hunts, soulless side quests (kill the guy, steal the thing) - and the new additions such as murder mysteries, whilst a good idea are executed in a way that couldn't be less interesting (eagle vision, find object, read painfully obvious clues, accuse). Co-op missions are fun to some extent - but it's easy to see why AC was on the ropes and needed a change at this point. More effort and time would have made this a solid outing.
