This game marks the first in a long line of "Discord Choices that didn't win", originally put forward by cramsnevets because he knows how much I enjoy a JRPG. Chained Echoes is a labour of love that draws inspiration from the classics of old like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire and Xenogears - and manages for the most part to pull off an impressive, deep and well-thought out tribute whilst bringing new things to the table. Funded through Kickstarter, and developed mainly by just one person - the game has 16 bit graphics, turn based combat, a deep story and a fantastic soundtrack. A pure joy to play.

I'm not going to go too far into the narrative, which revolves around 12 characters (with deep and well thought out individual stories) who want to bring peace to Valandis and its cycle of war and death. Through the journey there is heartbreak, humour, twists and drama. Sometimes it hits, but sometimes it tries a little too hard, and certainly has it's low points (I found the ending bittersweet in particular) - there is side content in abundance for those who really enjoy the way this game is constructed and its sheer depth - the main story alone is an impressive 30 hours, but I'm definitely going to see the rest through.

The mechanics are great, but require a lot of effort to get your head around to build an effective party. The overdrive meter, skills system, sky armour mechs and crystal combinations will have you initially scratching your head, but when it clicks, it clicks well - though building your perfect party can get quite dull. My criticisms are very minor, and whatever Matthias Linda plans to do next, I'm all ears.
