The 1986 championship in the real world was the last race of the season, with Mansell 72 points (70 valid points), Prost 65 points (64 valid points), and Piquet 63 points. Mansell, who had won the most races with five victories, could have become champion on his own if he had finished third or higher, but while running third, his rear wheel burst and he retired. Prost overcame Piquet's pursuit to win the championship and become the upset champion.
