Asteroids (PS1)
This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Sony Playstation. Loading times and menus have been removed for your consideration and enjoyment.
I am not old enough to actually have played the original arcade back in the day. I am however old enough to have played the Atari 2600 version back when it came out. If I ever had a favorite game on the Atari, it was Asteroids. It wasn't until years later that I saw the original arcade Asteroids with it's cool vector style graphics on my Atari Anniversary Collection on the Playstation. I loved it. Along with the original Asteroids it also had Asteroids Deluxe. Last year when I decided to really increase my video game collection I ran into this game. It's not really a remake. It's more of a reboot.
This version of Asteroids features not so much of a story, but a simple objective briefing before each stage that consists of 15 levels. While the objectives are different for each stage, they are quite simple and all involve shooting and blowing up crap which is all good. In this Asteroids you have special weapon, shield repair, and extra life pick ups that appear from time to time. You have three ships to pick from that range from fast and agile with weak shield protection to slow and stiff with very strong shields. Then of course there is a ship that is in between those extremes. In this video I use the slow poke. Your shields are manually operated and you can hyper jump which is almost guaranteed to get your killed if you have a screen full of floating objects.
The purpose of my videos is to give you a good idea of the looks and gameplay so you may discover the rest of the game yourself if you choose to pick it up. The first stage that is shown shows the traditional Asteroids. The next stages change up the game quite a bit. You don't always shoot asteroids in different settings. Sometimes asteroids are not even the objective. In other words the game play changes enough to keep you from getting bored with it.
This is a great game. It has nice graphics, excellent sound, and tight controls. If you are any kind of a fan of Asteroids, this is a must have. As a matter of fact if you're any kind of a shooter fan you should pick this game up.
