Atari Anthology - PS2 - Asteroids
2Playing through all 33 single player variations of Asteroids on Atari 2600.
This is a 1981 port of the 1979 arcade classic, where you blast rocks in outer space.
It's a playable port that you can definitely spend a few hours on, seeing how well you do on the different variations, or just chasing a score on your favourite one. Sometimes the collision detection seems off, and there's a luck factor involved, especially with the UFOs, but there's still enough skill based gameplay to keep it interesting.
The variations provide a combination of power ups, score bonuses and fast or slow asteroids. For power ups, you can choose hyperspace (a teleport), shield, flip (a quick turn) or no power up. The "bonus" is an extra life every time you score the specified amount.
I try out everything here, and obviously I do better on the slow asteroid setting than the fast one. It's always on hard, which features UFOs and satellites. They make the game a lot harder as it's usually them that kill you. I didn't do too great on the first couple of variations but started doing OK once I'd got a feel for it.
