Atari is celebrating its 50th anniversary by combining NFTs with... lootboxes? Teaming up with Republic Realm, “one of the most active developers of the metaverse and NFT ecosystem”, to sell off a collection that is being dubbed ‘GFTs’. The announcement follows modern Atari's other well-documented ventures, which includes Atari Token cryptocoin and Atari Hotels.
Atari GFT Collection:
▸ GFTs are ‘giftable’ NFTs which initially appear as blind gift-wrapped boxes.
▸ On a specific date, the GFT will then ‘unwrap’ to reveal an NFT based on a classic Atari title.
▸ GFTs can be “common, rare or epic”. (less than 5% chance for “rare”, less than 1% for “epic”.)
▸ Encouraging multiple purchases - four or more will unlock the ability to buy “a fifth surprise GFT”.
▸ GFT holders will be eligible to compete in game competitions, with top scores offering access to special rewards and a Discord trading server.
▸ There will also be “more to come in the metaverse”.
Atari CEO Wade Rosen:
▸ “The Atari brand is synonymous with video games, and video gaming is the backbone of the metaverse. What better way to commemorate Atari’s 50th anniversary than by ushering in a new era of technological innovation while also honoring the brand that launched the modern video game industry?”
▸ Back in Oct, Rosen stated they were "pivoting back to focusing on game development."
