Avar vs Avar small town siege, failed encirclement
0As Avars, attempted a multi-pronged assault on a small town occupied by opponent who were also Avars. Initial approach included containing and depleting occupied forces at the town's southern entrance.
Occupying force did not engage in any offensive maneuvers, instead deploying a rapid counter-move reactive defense. Simultaneously, with the southern approach, sent a large cohort of cavalry to the towns northern entrance to disable catapults and begin encirclement procedure. Given opponents equal mobility, and force composition in cavalry, was not able to penetrate their lines in the northern segment of the town.
Similarly propelled a second force, adjacent-west of the initial assault on the town's southern entrance , and was again met with an equal mass/mobility counter-force. Opponent committed an error by holding back a significant reserve force at the center of town, instead of committing them to repel either assault. This decision, combined with massive flame arrow barrage actions by the invading force which disabled large portions of their defensive structures, allowed the invading force to slowly creep in and diminish defenders numbers and morale.
Defenders eventually submitted after their lines broke in short sequence at the town's southern entrance. Moderate victory for the invader, which suffered approximately 60% of opponent's casulaties
