Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will release sometime in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series S/X, PC, Stadia and Amazon Luna.
Frontiers of Pandora was officially revealed during Ubisoft’s Ubisoft Forward showcase at E3 2021. It took us all somewhat by surprise, but we’re still waiting for Ubisoft to narrow down that release window. We know that the game was previously delayed into Ubisoft's financial year starting April 2022 in response to the delay of Avatar 2, the film.
Now known as Avatar: The Way of Water, the film sequel launches on December 16, 2022. However, Frontiers of Pandora's release, while originally targeting 2022, has since been delayed into the next financial year, which begins in March 2023.
“We want to make [Avatar] a video game industry brand. It is important for us that we come with something that is perfect." Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated during an earnings call.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora tech test
The Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora tech test certainly dropped some jaws with its immersive, incredibly detailed world that could easily be mistaken for a scene from the film. "As the world of Avatar is so different from anything we've done before, we had to do some major upgrades, some big improvements, to our engine," said technical art director Sebastian Lindoff during the showcase. "In the past, Snowdrop allowed us to build amazing cities, but to capture the natural beauty of Pandora, we needed to push Snowdrop even further."
Snowdrop allows devs to process complex shaders which means they can create real-time wind simulations and plants that react to players' presence. There's even a new volumetric cloud system that will have you sky-gazing quite a bit during gameplay.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora has been in the pipeline for some time, but we were finally given a glimpse of the game at E3 2021. Players will take control of one of the blue native species from the film called the Na’vi and traverse what is being described as an open, ‘living and reactive world’ whilst fighting off the exploitative human RDA corporation whose goals threaten the planet.
