Awesome Video Game Music 218: Ode to the Bridge Builder
One thing I forgot to mention about World of Goo is how its music manages to make a game about blobs of muck actually rather profound. Maybe that's aided by the environmentalist message or the heavily physic-based gameplay, but I digress. Ode to the Bridge Builder is an absolutely gorgeous piece of music. This theme honestly makes me raise my head high and feel like I can do anything whenever I hear it, as if this theme is saying "Get up! March forward!" The instrumentation and chorus is just wonderful here, making a song featured in a game about goo sound like a morning wake-up call in the military! The context this song is first featured in is probably one of the best uses of music in a game I've ever seen. This bold marching song plays at the end of Chapter One as the sun is setting, effectively being a symbol of the true adventure being on the horizon. All of the scenery is even shadowed by the sun, and the sensations this scene evokes just feel incredible. This song's proof that you don't need a big budget to make a good soundtrack; it just has to work. And man, did World of Goo's music do just that.
