*NOTE* This was played as a Tool-Assisted Playthrough. That means slowdowns were used and rewinding when things went terribly awry. Damage taken is mooostly intentional to create drama, but sometimes I just got hit by something I didn't notice and decided to roll with it as a natural thing. The SA1 Hack fixes various slowdowns and thus, makes the game run faster.

Axelay is a game whose cover capitvated me as a kid and when the time came for me and my friend to rent it, we enjoyed it thoroughly. Having played R-Type before I was somewhat experienced with schmups ( Shoot 'em ups as they were known more commonly back then ) and adapted quickly to the gameplay loop. Though I wasn't a fan of the behind-the-ship perspective, it was aneat thing. But then came, level 2: Colony. And it blew our minds. Going from behind the ship to a more classic side view, the music and the stage itself. Perfection. The Axelay itself is a very stylistic ship, well-deserving of it's place among the iconic schmup-ships.

When all is said and done however, I still got a fondness more for R-Type with it's Gigeresqian biomechanical horrors—the Byod—and melancholic nihilism.

PS. The part where the music goes silent it's because, I believe, YT falsely identified someone else to be the holders of that. I don't want to wait a month or so arguing against it so I decided to mute that minute...
