Aztech Waverider Platinum-3D PNP ISA soundcard playing Descent II music (General Midi Wavetable)
Hello Folks.
In today‘s little friday episode, we would like to present you my Aztech Waverider Platinum-3D PNP with FCC-ID I38-MMSN853.
It features a Samsung (SEC) wavetable synthesizer with 32 voice polyphony an 1MB sample-ROM with an average quality. It sounds a bit trashy like beeing sampled in 22kHz with eight bit resolution but upsampled to 44,1kHz with 16 bits in realtime. All in all it is ok for casual DOS gaming with general MIDI music. Where it really scores (only my opinion) are titles with some sort of Rock or Heavy scores like Duke3d and DOOM.
I think with an average FX processor the sound of the wavetable would be really cool. Sadly the Samsung lacks such a little helper.
Heart of the card is the Aztech 2320 all-in-one PNP chip (engineered in cooperation with Yamaha) with a maximum sampling capability of up to 48kHz with a resolution of 16 bits in stereo. It‘s real Yamaha OPL3 core (mind the stamp) makes it fully compatible to AdLib and OPL3 FM. PCM-wise it is fully compatible to the Soundblaster, Soundblaster 2.0 and Soundblaster Pro II standards as well as Microsoft Sound System, the latter with full 48kHz, 16 bit stereo support, if supportet by the game.
Configuration is really straight forward. First install Intel‘s PNP Manager, which is included in the driver package. Configure the card‘s ressources inside the manager and you are good to go. Sometimes it even works with just the BIOS‘s PNP support. Next step, if you want to, is to install Windows drivers and tools. In this case you better have Windows 3.1 installed because the DOS installer does neither install all utillities, nor does it alter config.sys and autoexec.bat files. At least in my case.
I don*t write anithing about Win 9x and later versions because it is self explanatory and just works.
Well, enough blahblah for now. Make up your own mind and listen to the short but great example of the Descent ][ Credits theme.
As allways: Share your thoghts and wishes with us and ask if you want further information on this card.
If you like our work, leave a like and maybe follow. But now enjoy the video.
Cheers and thanks for watching,
Dozzy and Ernie
